“Where does a wise man hide a leaf? In the forest.”
This phrase, widely known from Gilbert Keith Chesterton’s The Innocence of Father Brown, suggests that the most effective way to conceal something is to blend it into a multitude of similar elements.
In designing a yakiniku restaurant, when downward exhaust systems are not feasible due to various constraints, exposed exhaust ducts descending from the ceiling often become a challenging design issue.
In this project, the “negative element” of the exhaust duct is reinterpreted as a “positive design motif.” By multiplying and integrating tubular forms inspired by the ducts, the space is conceived as a forest-like environment in which duct-like elements descend rhythmically from above.
